During this period ,sixteen Mahājanapadas- the great Kingdoms or countries in ancient India- had evolved and flourished in a belt stretching from Gandhara in the northwest to Anga in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent and included parts of the trans-Vindhyan region,prior to the rise of Buddhism in India.Magadha formed one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas or regions in ancient India. The core of the kingdom was the area of Bihar south of the Ganges
