  1. A ship is not a solid block of metal It has been shaped to contain many interior spaces that contain air and not steel or water. Air weighs less than water and steel. Another way to say it is the ship is less dense than the solid block of steel. When a ship is in the water, it sinks until enough water has been displaced to equal its weight. The total volume of the ship is much larger than the volume of a solid block of steel of the same weight. The ship will displace much more water than the solid block.
