  1. Squirrels belong to the rodent family and the word was first specified in 1327. In Greek, ‘skiouros’ means a ‘shadowed tail’ and it refers to the bushy tail of the squirrel. The word was specified for the first time in 1327. If you trace history, squirrel comes from Anglo-Norman word ‘esquirel’ which in turn finds its origin in Old French word ‘escurel’. This is a reflex of the Latin word sciurus which is borrowed from the Greek word ‘skiouros’.
