  1. While animals have claws human beings have nails. They are made up of keratin which is a protein found in the nails as well as hair. Its main function is to protect the fingertips and surrounding softer tissues from injury. The nail grows just below the skin at its proximal end and this is the only living part of the nail. The rest of the part from the cuticle is dead cells. The colours of the nails are suggestive of the health of an individual. For example, a healthy individual has healthy rosy pink coloured nails while a person with a low haemoglobin level would have pale coloured nails. It takes about a year to a year and a half for a new nail to grow completely from its base to the tip. On an average, human nail grows at the rate of 3 mm a month.
