  1. During the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan, the royal treasury was drained to the last penny owing to his order to build the Taj Mahal in memory of his late wife. In addition, he lived a life of luxury by drawing a heavy salary for himself in addition to the rare jewels he used for adorning himself. Therefore, when Aurangzeb ascended the throne, the treasury was not only empty but the kingdom was bankrupt.
In order to get things back in order, Emperor Aurangzeb never drew a state salary from the royal treasury. Instead he earned his livelihood by selling caps and his own hand-written copies of the Quran.
