Lord Nataraja is regarded as the presiding deity of dance in the Indian Classical dance. Lord Shiva is depicted as the cosmic dancer who performs the Tandavam to prepare the renewal of the Universe. As the cosmic dancer, Shiva is shown as the source of movements within the entire cosmos. The Word ‘Nataraja’ itself is a combination/ of two words in Tamil- Natya meaning dance and Raja meaning King. Here the Lord is an ascetic with matted locks and dances in frenzy. He has four arms and dances balancing on the right foot symbolizing grace and balance of opposite forces. He dances in an arch of flames that represent illusion and material world.
