It is the season of mangoes in India and they are known as the ‘king of fruits’. Mangoes are botanically called Mangifera indica and originated in the Indian subcontinent. They are one of the most cultivated fruits in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. Although fresh mangoes contain a variety of nutrients they contain a significant amount of folic acid and vitamin C. In West Indies, the phrase ‘go for a mango walk’ means to steal somebody else’s mango fruits. Vendors commonly pluck unripe mangoes from the orchard and later spray them with chemicals like calcium carbide to ripen them artificially. An artificially ripened mango is neither healthy nor tasty as a natural one.
