Diabetes : Answer to 10 Questions Everyone Should Know

Diabetes is spreading in world like a wild fire. As per World Health Organization , about 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, a number likely to more than double in the next 20 years.Then, in 2012, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths. So , we have selected most important question that one should know in order to prevent and fight this  silent killer disease. But let us first understand

When food is digested and sugar is produced which enters the bloodstream. A hormone called ‘insulin’, which is produced by the pancreas  removes excess glucose out of the blood and lets the balance required sugar to cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. However , if either pancreas is not producing the insulin or the insulin is not removing excess sugar from blood stream , your body cannot break down glucose into energy. 2. What are types of Diabetes ?

There are 4 different types of diabetes with different causes:

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

When the pancreas stop making insulin, which is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. This cause is genetically related. Other causes can be the loss of the pancreas due to pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

This is when there is problem in the pancreas productions of insulin and the ability of cells to utilize insulin. The main causes can include genetic and lifestyle issues.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
This is caused by high blood sugar level during the pregnancy period.

Diabetes Insipidus
This is also called “Water” diabetes, it is not related to the sugar levels in the blood. This occurs as a result of problems in regulating the hormone vasopressin, which tells the kidneys how much to concentrate the urine.

3.What are the early sign or symptoms of Diabetes?

Following are the most common list of signs or symptom that you may have diabetes:

  1. Excessive thirst and huger hunger
  2. Frequent urination
  3. Poor sleep
  4. Sudden weight loss
  5. Blurred vision
  6. Numbness in the hands and feet
  7. Recurrent of yeast infections in women
  8. Dry or itchy skin

Some of the diabetes mellitus symptom can be also in other kind s of disease.

4. How to get tested for diabetes ?

Diabetes is diagnosed through laboratory blood tests: the fasting blood glucose test, hemoglobin A1c test, and the oral glucose tolerance test. Serious complications arise with type 2 diabetes, if not diagnosed early, or if inadequately controlled. Regular check-ups and monitoring are stressed, as these can help delay or prevent many diabetes complications.

5. Can Diabetes  be cured?

Type 1 Diabetes cannot be cured but can be treated through regular injections of insulin. Other treatments can be the injection of patient or donor islets of Langerhans to replicate the pancreas function.

Type 2 Diabetes can be cured by eliminating hydrogenated oils and trans-fats from the diet. The diet must be controlled and replaced with natural oils such as flaxseed, olive oil, real butter, lard, any organic animal or plant fats, coconut oil, etc. It can also be treated by medication to stimulate the production of insulin.

Treatment for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus includes insulin and other medications. But the symtoms will reduce usually after the end of pregnancy.

Diabetes Insipidus can be treated by drinking enough fluid, as well as medication.

Spinach
The American Diabetes Association calls spinach a diabetes super food and recommends that you regularly include this dark green leafy non-starchy vegetable in your diet. Besides being rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, spinach possesses a low glycemic index, which means eating it will help support healthy and stable blood glucose levels. Spinach is low in carbohydrates, containing only 0.83 grams per cup. The fact that spinach contains so few carbohydrates makes it an excellent choice on a diabetes diet.

Broccoli
Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which triggers several anti-inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect blood vessels from the cardiovascular damage that’s often a consequence of diabetes.

Olive oil
Olive oil is recognized as one of the healthiest edible oils since it contains less saturated fats. It is rich in Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, contains tyrosol phenolic compounds such as oleuropein and oleocanthal. These compounds are nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants.

Sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics.
The glycemic index of sweet potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according to a 2002 article in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes.

Avocados
Avocados are an excellent choice for people with diabetes because they are very rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous health benefiting plant nutrients.

Blueberries
Blueberries contain both insoluble fiber (which “flushes” fat out of your system) and soluble fiber (which slows down the emptying of your stomach, and improves blood sugar control). It also contain a natural plant compound known as anthocyanins. Scientists believe these may help lower blood sugar by boosting insulin production.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. They are also a very good source of, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium, and vitamin B1. Because of their low carbohydrate content, tomatoes can play a big role in controlling blood sugar levels. The low carbohydrate content also helps lower calorie intake and can help diabetics to lose weight.
Eggs
Eggs are a versatile food and a great source of protein, and the American Diabetes Association considers eggs an excellent choice for people with diabetes.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon spice has the highest anti-oxidant strength of all the food sources in nature. Many studies show that consumption of one teaspoon cinnamon to three teaspoons a day has a positive effect on reducing blood glucose levels. It was found that the cinnamon can make your cells more sensitive to insulin.
