It is also the largest of the Solar System’s fourÂ terrestrial planets.Â Earth formedÂ 4.54 billion years ago, andÂ life appeared on its surface within one billion years.Â The planet is home to millions ofÂ species, includingÂ humans.Â Earth’sÂ biosphere has significantly alteredÂ the atmosphere and otherÂ abiotic conditions on the planet, enabling the proliferation ofÂ aerobic organisms as well as the formation of theÂ ozone layer which, together withÂ Earth’s magnetic field, blocks harmfulÂ solar radiation, permitting life on land.
