The expansion of British power in India started with the growing trades by English East India Company. It waged war with other princely state in order to have monopoly over the trade . Respective government of Britain or France or Dutch or Portuguese openly supported the trading company to visit other place in world for trade purpose and for creating monopolistic trade wage war and capture the territories . The East India Company actually arrived in India for trade , but they later found that it was impossible for them to trade without making the ruler of the place friendly and for that reason he ( the ruler ) will have to provide protection. British traders used very clever ploys to slowly slowly acquire princely state under their rule.
