What is Body Mass Index (BMI) ? A Quiz to Test Your Knowledge

Published on October 17, 2014

The body mass index is a measure of relative weight of a person depending upon its height and weight. It’s also known as Quetelet Index as it was devised by Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet in 19th century.

BMI is widely used worldwide as a method of sorting individuals in the categories of normal weight, over weight, obese or underweight. Although It’s used widely as a standard chart, BMI values vary depending upon a lot of factors including age, gender, country, occupation, etc.

How is BMI or Body Mass Index Calculated ?

BMI is calculated by dividing individuals weight(in kgs) with the square of its heights (in meters).

Individuals with a BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 are generally considered healthy as per the BMI chart. 25 to 29.9 are over weight and 30+ BMI is considered obese. Similarly people with BMI below 18.5 are considered under weight and below 16 are severely underweight.

Although BMI above 25 is considered overweight and obese, it might not always be so, as athletes and bodybuilders for example, have more muscle mass and less fat. Similarly an active person with slightly higher BMI can be more healthy and fit from an individual with BMI in normal range but with sedentary life style.

Obesity and underweight, both are associated with various health conditions and weight has to be kept in normal range for a healthy life style.
